- The Snell Safety Education Center gave away more than 60
Snell/DOT helmets at the Walt Grey Ride on August 26 near Sacramento,
California. This wrapped up the Motorcycle Helmet Exchange Program
funded by the California Office of Traffic Safety. Through this
grant project, Snell staff reached out to riders in 5 different
locations in California. Information on the use of protective
headgear was passed out to hundreds of active motorcyclists.
A total of 164 riders swapped their bogus helmets with new Snell/DOT
helmets.

- On June 23-24, 2012, Snell was at the Infineon Raceway in
Sonoma, California to educate the public about the risk of brain
injuries and the benefit of protective helmets. Some Snell certified
full-face and open-face helmets were given away to motorcyclists
for exchange of their bogus helmets. Snell will continue this
educational helmet exchange program through the summer.

- On June 3rd, 2012, the Snell Safety Education Center held
the first Motorcycle Helmet Exchange Program event in Vacaville,
CA to help increase awareness of truly protective headgear.
More than 30 helmets were given away for exchange of bogus helmets.
The program is funded by the California Office of Traffic Safety
and sponsored by Livermore Police Department and California
Highway Patrol. Protect Your Head and Wear a Helmet!

- The Snell Safety Education Center, Inc. has been awarded
a motorcycle safety educational grant by the California Office
of Traffic Safety for one year. The goal of the grant project
is to increase public awareness of protective motorcycle helmets.
The Snell Safety Education Center will use part of the grant
money to purchase Snell/DOT certified helmets. In collaboration
with the Livermore Police Department and the California Highway
Patrol, those Snell/DOT helmets will be given out to motorcycle
riders for exchange of their bogus helmets at public rallies
and motorcycle riding events. Presentation of protective helmets
and information about the benefit of Snell/DOT helmets will
be distributed at those events.

The BMW Motorcycle
Owners of America
was formed in April of 1972 as an all volunteer organization.
According to the Articles of Incorporation the BMW MOA was formed
for the purpose to operate and maintain a national BMW motorcycle
owners club. The goal of the club is to promote the camaraderie
and friendship of individual members and BMW motorcycle clubs.

- Dr. Daniel Thomas will speak at the Gear Up Conference in
Springfield, IL on December 15, 2011. This is a state-wide motorcycle
rider education conference organized by the Illinois Dept. of
Transportation. Dr. Thomas’s presentation will illustrate the
mechanism of head and brain injuries and the advantage of M2010
certified helmets in managing impacts and prevent such injuries.

- Snell will host a helmet testing lab tour for a group of
nursing students from California State University at Sacramento
on September 22, 2011. This lab tour is Snell’s effort to offer
a unique opportunity to enrich the nursing program’s curriculum
in injury prevention and community health activities. It has
been well received for the last several years. Students will
learn about head injury risks, effectiveness of various helmets
in preventing injury, observe Snell helmet testing, and receive
hands-on training to fit helmets properly.

- Dr. Thomas is going to give a Snell & Helmet Standards
presentation to the annual conference of the State Motorcycle
Safety Administrators Association in Des Moines, Iowa on August
20th and 21st, 2011. The audience of Dr. Thomas’ presentation
is state administrators of motorcycle safety and licensing agencies
and motorcycle riding school coaches from all over the United
States. The presentation will cover these subjects: motorcycle
injury statistics, brain injury mechanisms, helmet’s effectiveness
in preventing fatalities and injuries, comparison of Snell M2010
standard, DOT and EC standard, Snell test programs and standards.

- Snell Foundation laboratory has been approved for continued
accreditation by American Association for Laboratory Accreditation
(A2LA) in the Mechanical field of testing. The laboratory is
accredited to ISO/IEC 17025:2005.

- Mr. Ed Becker will make a presentation on helmets and Snell
Standards during the BMW Motorcycle Owners Association's
(BMW MOA) 39th International Rally from July 21 to July 24,
2011 in Bloomsburg, PA. He will also meet young riders in the
workshop CAMP GEARS before the rally to have similar discussions.
In 2010 the Snell Foundation received the award of OUTSTANDING
CONTRIBUTION TO MOTORCYCLE SAFETY given by the BMW MOA Foundation.

- Mr. Edward Becker, Snell’s Executive Director, is going
to give a presentation to the Missouri Motorcycle Safety Program
Spring Meeting on March 19th, 2011 at Lake of the
Ozarks (central Missouri). He is looking forward to meet motorcycle
safety administrators and motorcycle riding school coaches in
Missouri. His presentation focuses on brain injury mechanism,
effectiveness of protective helmets, comparison of Snell, DOT
and EC motorcycle helmet standards.
